Drew's First Day of School

School has been a little bit of a different experience for us than in the USA. You can't just go register you kiddo and expect that they will be welcomed at school the next day. There is a competition for schools, applications, catchment zones, interviews, and acceptance letters. Unfortunately, we got into the game a little late, but we amazingly got Drew an interview at Beacon Hill School. A spot had just opened up from a move right before we contacted them. It is part of the English School Foundation - so it is the British learning system.

His interview was Wednesday after we arrived and he woke up in the morning with a bad headache and throwing up. After he rested for a while, he said he felt better, so we decided to still go for the interview. We sat in the lobby waiting, and just before they called him to go with the vice principal, he threw up again. The kid sure knows how to make a first impression! He decided to go ahead with the interview and did a great job. He got accepted to the school!!!! He was pretty excited for his first day of school, so even though he was still sick, he was up and dressed in uniform by 5:30. We kept him home for another day, but it was fun to see him get so excited. His uniform that he wears is purple knickers, a purple dress shirt with red stripes, purple socks and shiny (yes, that was a requirement) black shoes. He also has a school backpack and bookbag. There is a casual uniform as well that he wears on his two PE days.
So far, he has really loved his class and being at the school. Oh, I almost forgot his favorite part - he is in FOURTH GRADE. He is such a smarty-pants so he is doing really well, but that is quite a jump to go from first to fourth grade over a summer. He is loving it!
